Here's the thing - singing is supposed to be fun. It can be intimidating at first, but being able to sing can open up a world of musical expression with a bit of technique and practice. Let's develop your unique voice together.
Have a big performance or a particular song that's evading you? Perhaps you want to surprise a loved one by singing one of their favorites? Writing a song and need some help? Whatever your project, we can make it happen
Got the basics down, but need to work on your technique or entering a new genre? We can work on aural skills, genre-specific techniques (i.e. jazz tradition), and supplemental choir training
Never could carry a tune and want to try your hand at singing? We'll go over the basics of ear-training, pitch matching, and techniques to protect your voice
Breath work is foundational to all vocal performance. We’ll start with diaphragmatic breathing which will provide the power needed to project your voice. We’ll take that power and harness it through breath control exercises that will help shape and navigate the vocal performance.
It may feel like singing simply emits from the vocal cords in our throat, but when done correctly, the vocalist’s whole body works together to reach notes and find pitches through a song. In fact, resting too heavily on your vocal cords or throat can be detrimental to your voice. We focus on the full-body experience of singing and all of the exercises, stretches, and habits that keep all of our singing muscles happy.
Overall, we’re here for a good time. Music can be cathartic, therapeutic, fun, joyful, sorrowful, angry, and bonding. Singing can be an intuitive and easy way to express emotion or simply live in the human experience of creating song. While I’m here to give guidance on pitches and proper vocal technique, I’m also here to walk with you on your journey to finding your own voice and share in the ancient and cross-cultural experience of making music.
I have been a vocalist and performer my entire life, starting with classical training from the age of 6 at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. While my roots are in classical voice, I have worked in rock, R&B, contemporary & traditional jazz. I'm a performer at heart & have over 15 years of on-stage experience that I am happy to pass on to my students.
